Is Peru going to qualify for the World Cup? The eight-year-old Feliciano is glued to the radio, listening to the football commentary, as he treks through the Peruvian Andes with his herd of alpaca.
Against this youthful innocence, the encroaching mines and industry threaten the very existence of Feliciano’s village and its centuries-old traditions. The traders who buy his father’s wool have already fallen prey to the greed of modern times. The cinematography in Through Rocks and Clouds and the landscapes are especially impressive, but the real showstoppers in this film are the cuddly alpacas.
The original name of the film given by director Franco García Becerra from Cusco was Raíz (‘root’ in Spanish), which symbolises the situation in which the traditional Quechua community finds itself. Through Rocks and Clouds will appeal to mountain lovers in particular, but this is a universal film which will touch the heartstrings of every target audience and generation. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival where it won several awards.
