The Porter – The untold story at Everest

Year: 2020

Director: Nathaniel Menninger

Playing time: 55 minutes

Language: Nepali

Subtitles: English

At first sight, Nathan Menninger is just another tourist who wants to make the trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. But it soon turns out he speaks Nepalese and his intentions are quite different. By spending his days with the porters, he reveals to us another side of life in the trekking business which the average tourist never gets to see. Those who are planning such a trip in the future, should surely watch this film.

Menninger takes his undertaking seriously, sleeping on the floor with his fellow porters, eating with them in grubby kitchens, not showering for days on end, and carrying dozens of kilos on his forehead, using the characteristic head strap (or ‘namlo’). In the conversations he has with his colleagues, the viewer is given a clear insight into their harsh existence. Complete with lousy pay and the indispensable, but often unpredictable tip…
