The camera follows Fré Leys in his preparations for the first world championships in Salt Lake City. He first has to get through qualifying before he can even think of fulfilling his dream. In between events, he is accompanied by climbing friends and he learns how to cope with disappointment.
Director Vincent Groos has the knack of painting a portrait of people in all their strengths and weaknesses. He started climbing to overcome his paralysing fear of heights, learning how to trust others and to let go of his need for control. Climbing for Gold is proof that he has defeated his demons.
