By way of the 360° technique that director Carlos Isabel Garcia uses for ‘Caves’, this film explores the depths with speleologist Lea Odermatt. The claustrophobic passages and huge caverns bristling with fascinating stalactite and stalagmite formations can normally only be accessed by experienced cavers. ‘Caves’ lets you wander this subterranean labyrinth.

From the comfort of your cinema seat, you can experience for yourself how it feels to squeeze through narrow cavities, to be suspended in gaping galleries and to explore the underground world at close quarters. Engulfed by darkness, the torchlight of the caver in front of you is your only guide. Further and further into the underworld.

The Spanish filmmaker Carlos Isabel Garcia is fascinated by speleologists. They are physically and mentally strong, adventurous, but also cautious. 360° film allows the sense of space underground, or perhaps a lack of it, to be conveyed to the viewer. ‘This is the ideal medium to capture the timeless, mysterious and beautiful underground world.’
