DMFF Fiets: an evening of cycling films

With spring finally upon us and with such iconic cycling climbs as the Eyserbosweg, the Keutenberg and the Dodeman within spitting distance, Heerlen’s Royal Theater will once again be hosting DMFF Fiets, the traditional special screening of cycling films by the Dutch Mountain Film Festival.

DMFF Fiets, which takes place on Friday 4 April 2025, allows cycle fanatics and film buffs to indulge their fantasies! The programme for the evening includes a compelling film, guests from the world of cycling, and great live music. The perfect start to the cycling season! Don’t forget, if you come by bike, you can park it inside the theatre!

Cycling film: Merckx (2025)

Portrait of the greatest cyclist of all time Eddy Merckx, aka ‘the cannibal’, by the Belgian filmmakers Christophe Hermans en Boris Tilquin.  This brand new documentary contains an impressive amount of archive material, including some breakneck descents accompanied by an electrifying synthesiser soundtrack.

Between 1967 and 1975, Eddy Merckx won everything there was in professional road cycling, leaving his competitors in the dust: five Tour de Frances, five Giro D’Italias, three World Championships, a Vuelta, a legendary world hour record in Mexico and countless one-day classics. In the space of less than a decade he became the ultimate cycling legend.  However, the more he won, the more admiration turned to polarisation.  How was it possible to continue cycling when adoration turned to abhorrence?

With a handbike on the Dutch Mountain Ride

This time it’s Sabrina Schoenmaker’s turn on the podium. She aims to criss-cross Iceland by bike. To prepare for the adventure, Sabrina will be coming with a group of fellow adventurers to Zuid-Limburg in June to tackle the Dutch Mountain Ride over three days. With a handbike that is, as Sabrina has MS.

Cycling music

Musical accompaniment for the evening will be in the capable hands of the Joi de Patrice trio. With Duncan on drums, Paul on the keyboards and the dulcet tones of Patrice, we are ensured of an evening full of cycling sounds.
